Tune In, Speak Up: Unleashing the Power of Body Wisdom and Self-Advocacy

Hi Friends! Happy New Year! I’d like to dive right in here about our own personal lives!

Life often feels like a whirlwind of demands, responsibilities, and external voices telling us what to do. We get caught up in the hustle, the expectations, the "shoulds," and somewhere along the way, we forget to listen to the most important voice of all: our own body.

Our bodies are incredible communication hubs. They whisper, shout, and everything in between, telling us what they need, what feels good, and what's pushing us beyond our limits. But in the cacophony of daily life, we often miss these subtle cues, leading to burnout, frustration, and even physical ailments.

This is where the power of body wisdom comes in. It's about cultivating a deep connection with your physical self, learning to interpret its signals, and honoring its needs. It's about tuning into the subtle aches, the bubbling energy, the sudden fatigue, and understanding what each one is trying to tell you.

Here's how to start tuning in:

  • Slow down: In the rush of daily life, it's easy to ignore our bodies. Take mindful breaks, practice deep breathing, and carve out moments for quiet introspection.

  • Listen to your senses: Pay attention to physical sensations without judgment. Notice the tension in your shoulders, the butterflies in your stomach, the warmth in your hands. These can be powerful indicators of your emotional and physical state.

  • Move your body: Physical activity is a gateway to body awareness. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's dancing, yoga, or simply a walk in nature. Movement helps release tension, clear your mind, and connect with your physical self.

  • Keep a journal: Use a journal to track your physical sensations, emotions, and experiences. This can help you identify patterns and connections between your inner and outer worlds.

Now, let's talk about self-advocacy. When you understand your body's needs, it's time to speak up for them. This can be challenging, especially when faced with external pressures or conflicting opinions. But remember, you are the ultimate expert on your own body.

Here are some tips for effective self-advocacy:

  • Set boundaries: Learn to say "no" to things that drain your energy or compromise your well-being. Don't be afraid to prioritize your needs and set clear boundaries with others.

  • Communicate assertively: Express your needs and concerns clearly and confidently.Use "I" statements to avoid blame and focus on your own experience.

  • Seek support: Surround yourself with people who respect your choices and listen to your voice. Build a support system that empowers you to prioritize your well-being.

  • Believe in yourself: Trust your intuition and body wisdom. You know yourself best, and your voice deserves to be heard.

Remember, body wisdom and self-advocacy are powerful tools on your journey towards a healthier, happier you. By tuning in to your body's signals and speaking up for your needs, you take control of your well-being and create a life that truly resonates with you. So, turn up the volume on your inner voice, embrace your body's wisdom, and advocate for yourself with confidence. You are worth it!

Self-Care

Welcome back to my life and wellness coaching blog! In this entry, I want to talk about the importance of self-care and how it can benefit your overall well-being.

Self-care refers to any activity that you do to take care of your physical, mental, or emotional health. It can include anything from taking a relaxing bath to practicing mindfulness meditation. Self-care is an essential part of maintaining good health and well-being, and it is especially important during times of stress or uncertainty.

Here are some reasons why self-care is so important:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety: When you take time to care for yourself, you can reduce your stress and anxiety levels. Self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature can help you feel more relaxed and calm.

  2. Improves physical health: Practicing self-care can have a positive impact on your physical health. Activities like getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly can help prevent chronic illnesses and improve your overall health.

  3. Boosts mood and emotional well-being: Self-care activities can also help boost your mood and emotional well-being. Activities like spending time with loved ones, practicing gratitude, and engaging in hobbies you enjoy can help you feel happier and more fulfilled.

  4. Increases self-awareness: Self-care can also help you become more self-aware. When you take the time to listen to your body and mind, you can identify your needs and take steps to meet them.

Remember, self-care is not a one-time event but a continuous process of taking care of yourself. Here are some self-care ideas to get you started:

  • Take a relaxing bath or shower

  • Practice meditation or deep breathing

  • Go for a walk or engage in other forms of exercise

  • Spend time in nature

  • Journal or write down your thoughts and feelings

  • Practice gratitude by listing things you're thankful for

  • Connect with loved ones

Importance of Self-Reflection

Welcome back to my life and wellness coaching blog. In this entry, I want to focus on the power of self-reflection and how it can help you achieve your goals and improve your overall well-being.

Self-reflection is the process of taking a step back and examining your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It allows you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you. By reflecting on your past experiences, you can learn from your mistakes, celebrate your successes, and identify patterns that may be holding you back.

So, how can you incorporate self-reflection into your daily routine? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Keep a journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful tool for self-reflection. Set aside a few minutes each day to jot down your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

  2. Meditate: Meditation is a great way to quiet your mind and focus on the present moment. By practicing mindfulness, you can gain a greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions.

  3. Talk to a friend or coach: Sometimes, it can be helpful to talk through your experiences with someone else. A friend or coach can provide a new perspective and help you identify areas for growth.

  4. Set aside time for reflection: Make reflection a part of your daily or weekly routine. Set aside a specific time to reflect on your experiences, set goals, and track your progress.

Self-reflection can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, set achievable goals, and make positive changes in your life. By taking the time to reflect on your experiences, you can gain a greater sense of clarity and purpose. Remember, self-reflection is not about being perfect, but about learning and growing from your experiences. So, take some time for yourself and reflect on your journey towards wellness and personal growth.

Fertility

Just about 2 years ago I was told by not 1 but 2 doctors that I would not be able to get pregnant. I here in Miami and 1 in Greece. I was told I needed an egg donor but I didn’t believe that. The fear tried to take over my mind but never for a second did I think I would not be able to have a baby. The doctor here in Miami told me that I was premenopausal and that getting pregnant natural wasn’t in the cards for me. I can’t tell you how many times I prayed for a baby. I researched everything. I did not believe for a second that this was my reality. I changed my diet, I went to an acupuncturist, I meditated daily, I researched many specialists to see what their suggestions were but most of all I told myself and everyone that I was going to have a baby. People give you this look, like awe poor lady it’s okay just listen to the doctor and start to look into the procedure. No! Absolutely not! The world no a days is filled with money driven procedures and no one tries to find the root of the problem.

Well 2 years later I have 2 beautiful healthy babies! 1 boy and 1 girl and that happened with good old fashion sex.

If you are struggling with fertility please reach out. I would love to hear your story and answer any questions you have. In the meantime stay positive and know that your mind is and will is stronger than even you know.

Below is a podcast where I tell my story with Michelle my fertility acupuncturist.

Keep your light ON!

Most of my life I had intentionally stood in the shadows. My light was always too bright for the shadow to dim it, but I purposefully did that for others to be comfortable. Do not EVER dim your light so others can shine. You shine and SHINE as bright as you can, that is what makes you unique. Your light is what sets you apart from each person. There are so many people that spend so much time trying to replicate someone else's style, fashion, and looks that they never discover who they are. Fitting in isn’t something to strive for, standing out is!

Finally

Ugh it’s been a while since I last sat at my computer and was determined to write to my fellow readers.  There are so many topics I’d like to talk about, going back and forth with whether or not to start a podcast,  who is listening, who’s reading, and who’s judging.  I’ve decided I don’t care anymore, I am going to give you 100% authentic me.  So as I sit here pumping, eating, and waiting for my little one to wake up I can give you a little bit on what’s been going on.

I gave birth in December and it was the most unreal experience.  That story is going to be many different posts.  I went through so much mentally and perhaps physically.   I mean my body did get hijacked by my little Konstantinos, mommy doesn’t mind!

Leaving Miami to move to Naples in September is something I thought I wanted, as much as I was discussed with the city I miss it.  There is a certain energy that I miss, it made me feel alive!  Here it just feels like a warm Darien (suburb of IL where I grew up).

I was furloughed in March, before I knew I was pregnant.  Thinking it was only going to be a few weeks.  Well my coworkers didn’t go back to work until the weekend of NYE 2021!  So I was able to have a nice relaxing pregnancy.  I feel blessed to be enjoying this precious time with my little one.  However I do miss working.   Bartending, I miss it, I miss the conversation and my regulars.  I also miss all the new people I would meet day after day.  I am not going back to it but instead I’m here!  I am building my Life & Wellness Coaching business, which is going very well!  I have been life coaching for years behind the bar and not technically getting paid for it…and believe me there were times that I should have been!  Now I am legit certified and all!

Many people ask me who Emerick David is.  I’m not hiding behind a name, Emerick David is the middle name of my grandfathers, who were very special to me.  I wanted to honor them and this is the best way I knew how.  So I am off to feed the little one…enjoy the content!

Authentic

It’s hard enough in today's world trying to be who you are.  Part of that is being able to discover who you are.  Understandably, this can be difficult with so much media influence of who we should be, looks, sizes, style.  Oneself can get completely lost in the discovery of self, or even momentary periods.

Discovering who you are is truly important, and standing for who you are and what you believe is much more important.  Doing this means you need to disconnect from the cookie cutter world of images and DISCOVER what is important for you, resolve your unresolve, face your fears, be brave and bold to take a stand.  It means being uncomfortable in your own skin and knowing what that feels like so you can move past it.  Being afraid to fail, but knowing that success is on the horizon, and embracing change.  It means being able to feel the hurt, pain, happiness, laughter, without finding ways to buffer the emotions.

This process will last your lifetime because we never stop growing.  We must put our minds into action and be better for ourselves.  Your power lies within you, you are in control of your mind, which controls your thoughts and emotions, we MUST remember this.  I can help you get to that place!

Happy searching friends.

Letting Go

I have had to free myself of so much clutter in my life; there was so much stuff that I held on to for so long.  Ideas, clothes, notes, papers, friendships/relationships.  The thought was that they would reappear back in my life how they left or how I left them.  The memory that I held on to was going to magically arrive into reality exactly how I left it.  My realization now is that the way they left or dissipated in my life was the way it was meant to be.  It is my understanding now, why they were a part of my life to begin with.  Which is why now I am free to let go.  I chose to free myself from the clutter in my mind and physical space.  When doing so I have a sense of relief, accomplishment, and growth.

Just like stuff, relationships and/or friendships work the same way.  I haven’t always been the most trusting person, so when friendships are created in my life they mean a lot to me.  Few of these friendships have run their course and I have decided to step away from them.  Some of these decisions have been the hardest decisions to make.  They were no longer serving me in a positive way.  Choosing to stay was creating so much anxiety and sadness but the thought of ending them was as if I was giving up.  These feelings were just my feelings and not based on any truth whatsoever.  The fact was, I wasn’t giving up on anything. I had decided that my relationship with certain people wasn’t serving purpose anymore, for me or them.  I had to stay true to myself, my feelings, and not feel guilt for that.  That doesn’t mean that all the memories of the great times get erased, it just means that I have chosen to put my relationship with myself first.

Setting Positive Intention for your day!

Each day I wake up and want to set positive intentions for the day ahead.  This does not always happen. Why?  Why did I not complete my workout first thing in the morning? I woke up 30 minutes late, did that 30 minutes change my life! No, I chose to sleep through the time I said I would workout. I choose to stay in bed, skip my workout, and be angry about it all day. What If simply changed my thought process? What if before my alarm went off I was already awake and out of bed and working out! What if I skipped my workout because I choose to sleep and I felt good about that choice.

Both options are possible.  I have been on both sides of the spectrum.  It is the intention that we create for ourselves everyday that determines what we can and can not accomplish.  Understanding that it is a choice and everything we want is created within us.

Positive energy is important in your life, anything negative will determine your thoughts and actions.

What intention do you want to set for your day, week, month, year, or life? Start there, choose a word of intention for yourself.  Mine is DETERMINATION.  Understand that the way you feel is a choice, and if you're getting angry at reading this that is also a choice.  Let me help you figure out why!
